Deep, cold, and the least likely of these waters to lock up. Grand Traverse Bay only makes broad ice in genuinely hard winters, and when it does the whitefish and lake trout fishing is worth the wait.

The bay runs several hundred feet deep in places, and deep water holds an enormous amount of heat. That thermal mass means Grand Traverse Bay resists freezing long after shallower water has locked up, and in mild winters the main basin never freezes at all. What does freeze, and freezes first, is the shallow protected water: Suttons Bay, Bowers Harbor, the far south end of the west arm. Those are the traditional ice destinations and they are the only parts worth watching in most years.
