Shallow, current driven, and the closest hard water to several million people. Lake St. Clair produces excellent perch and pike ice fishing and it has some of the least forgiving ice in the state because of the flow moving through it.

St. Clair is essentially a wide spot in a river system. Water moves through it constantly on its way from Lake Huron to the Detroit River, and moving water undermines ice from below where you cannot see it. The DNR specifically warns that ice formed over current is often dangerous, and this entire lake is over current. Anchor Bay in the northeast is the traditional ice fishing water because flow there is weakest, and even that varies year to year.
